37th Annual Educational, Performance & Carcass Contest- RESULTS

37th Annual SCA EP&C Results

Cattle Entered

In this year’s SCA Education, Performance and Carcass Contest, 20 SCA members entered cattle consisting of 29 heifers and 78 steers, giving us a total of 107 head to feed out and evaluate. Cattle were fed at Lincoln County Feedyard in Stapleton, Nebraska from November 7, 2018 to July 18, 2019.

Breeds Included: SimAngus, Angus x Hereford, Angus, Red Angus, Red Angus x Hereford, Angus x Simmental x Maine Anjou and Angus x Maine Anjou.

Shipping Groups

Lincoln County Feedyard owner, Steve Scholz determines the shipping group based on a “sort system algorithm using linear measurements at reimplant. The algorithm was developed using ten years of ultrasound correlations with linear measurements and carcass data put together to get a system that needed minimal technician training and was highly repeatable” (Steve Scholz).

Breakdown

  • Shipping Group #0.5 (Harvested on 5/21/19; early due to being lame and going downhill)
    • 1 Heifer
  • Shipping Group #1 (Harvested on 5/28/19)
    • 19 Steers
    • 6 Heifers
  • Shipping Group #2 (Harvested on 6/10/19)
    • 34 Steers
    • 12 Heifers
  • Shipping Group #3 (Harvested on 7/18/19)
    • 24 Steers
    • 9 Heifers

Banquet

This year’s EP&C Banquet took place on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at the Sandhills Corral in Thedford, Nebraska. Contestants were served a prime rib supper and the event was also open to the public. Those in attendance were treated with a presentation by guest speaker, Dr. Jerry Woodruff. The presentation detailed handing and administration of vaccine and antibiotics. Dr. Woodruff has a lot of experience with this topic, including vaccinating cattle that were then harvested for science to show exactly what a vaccine will do to the muscle. After this presentation, Steve Scholz, Lincoln County Feedyard owner, spoke about how the cattle performed this year. Contestants received all the data, rankings and their checks from their cattle. The results of the contest were read and you can find these toward the end of this document.
